OSM maps for Garmin

Garmin GPS supports OSM (OpenStreetMap) maps, these are free, open and collaborative maps of the World. They are improved every day by more than a million contributors.

What is an OSM participatory map?

OpenStreetMap is the equivalent of Wikipedia for maps. Anyone can participate in adding or modifying map data.

OSM maps the globe, street by street, path by path. The OpenStreetMap community has over 1.5 million contributors worldwide. And anyone who knows a place, a route or simply the street where he lives can contribute to the enrichment of the database.

How to install them on Garmin GPS?

The method that works for most Garmin GPS's is:

Copy the gmapsupp.img file into the "garmin" folder located at the root of the device's memory.

Which Garmin devices are compatible?

In general, all Garmin devices are compatible with a few exceptions and some devices have limited memory and do not have memory card support. Below is a non-exhaustive list:

Cycling:

Edge 800, Edge 810, Edge 830, Edge 1000, Edge 1030 have support for sd memory card which can go up to several tens of GB.

The Edge 820 et Edge 5xx do not have external memory card support but have internal memory large enough to hold the majority of OSM maps.

Outdoor:

The Etrex 10, Etrex 12 and Etrex H do not have external memory support, usually their memory is limited.
The Etrex 20, Etrex 30 and Etrex Touch support large capacity sd memory cards.

The families of Etrex Vista, Venture and Legend have limited internal memory and only support an external memory card for models with an 'x' in their part number. Examples: Vista Cx, Legend Cx, Venture Cx.

The families of Oregon, whether it's Oregon 200-300, Oregon 4xx, Oregon 5xx, Oregon 6xx or Oregon 7xx, all support an external memory card.

The Colorado 300 or Colorado 400 support external sd memory cards.
